Explore Norwegian Minnesota Mini-Tour

September 14-18, 2016

An invitation for Norwegian Americans to join our Norwegian tour group from the region of
Setesdal, Norway to explore the areas that immigrants from Setesdal settled in Minnesota

Trillium Tours, LLC is leading a group of Norwegians from the Setesdal area of Norway on a tour of the Midwest with an emphasis on those areas immigrants from Setesdal settled. We are inviting local Midwesterners to join the group for part of the tour, beginning in Alexandria, MN, for four nights including one night in Fargo, where we will have dinner at Kringen restaurant, run by the local Sons of Norway, and two nights in Thief River Falls where we will enjoy dinner and a presentation at the local Sons of Norway lodge there. This will be a chance for locals and possible distant relatives of the Norwegians from Setesdal to mingle and get to know one another in a relaxed, fun atmosphere.

Ingeborg Sorensen, former owner of Trillium Tours, LLC and experienced guide, will lead the tour. Guest speaker and well-known local radio journalist from Valle in Setesdal, Ørnulf Hasla, who has been to the Midwest over 25 times and is very familiar with the area, will also accompany the group.

ITINERARY

September 14
Join the group in Alexandria at the Kensington Runestone Museum. Continue on the bus to Fargo, North Dakota and the Hjemkomst Museum, which contains the Hjemkomst Viking ship that sailed from Duluth to Bergen in 1982. A film about the ship will be shown. There is also a copy of the Hopperstad Stav Church from Vik in Sogn located at the museum. In the evening we will have dinner at the Sons of Norway Kringen Lodge and meet local Norwegian-Americans and have a chance to get to know the Norwegians from Setesdal better. Overnight at the Expressway Inn in Fargo, ND

September 15
Today we continue to the Northern part of Minnesota with its expansive farms and areas where immigrants from Setesdal settled, driving through Bygland, which was established in 1877 and onward to Thief River Falls. Many of the descendants of immigrants from Setesdal belong to the beautiful new church in Bygland.

In Thief River Falls we will meet with members of the local Sons of Norway, watch a short film with interviews from some of the original farmers and have another chance to mingle and get to know the Norwegians. Overnight at the Quality Inn, Thief River Falls

September 16
Today we have a day-trip to Grygla, MN, to see a relatively new church, but which is the combination of two older churches established by Setesdal immigrants, as well as cemeteries and other points of interest. Sightseeing in the area and dinner in Thief River Falls. Overnight at the Quality Inn, Thief River Falls

September 17
The tour continues through quaint small towns like Oklee, MacIntosh and Goodrich to Itasca State Park where we visit the start of the Mississippi River. We continue to Walker, a charming town in a beautiful area where many people have cabins. There are many antique stores and other boutiques and shops to explore. We overnight at Chase on the Lake Resort located at Leech Lake, one of the largest fishing lakes in Minnesota. Lunch provided. Dinner on your own

September 18
The tour drives south through Wadena, stopping in Alexandria to say farewell to the American participants.

According to the ethnic heritage section of the 2000 Federal Census, 50 percent of Thief River Falls residents identify themselves as Norwegian-American, making Thief River Falls one of the most ethnically concentrated towns in the nation.

Immigrants from Setesdal, one of the most distinctive and isolated of Norway’s valleys, formed their society (bygdelag) in 1909.
